Blueprints For Houses

Blueprints For Houses

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE The bulk of the San Luis Obispo Regional Blueprints Collection comes from the Southern Pacific Milling Company, with various architects and engineers signing off on the documents. The company was founded by R.M. Shackelford circa 1886. Shackelford was originally from Kentucky and came to California in 1853 in search of gold. He had many different occupations including mining, freight hauling, grain milling and lumbering, as well as politics serving one term in the Nevada State Legislature. In November of 1886, Shackelford moved to Paso Robles and began building warehouses and lumberyards along the railroad line between Soledad and Santa Margarita. He organized the Southern Pacific Milling Company and built nine warehouses and lumberyards, one of which was located in San Luis Obispo. This branch of the company still exists today. Another prominent name in the collection is the Klicka Lumber Company. Emil and George Klicka, two brothers from Chicago, moved to San Diego in 1921 and started several companies including the Klicka Lumber Company. Emil was a successful banker and managed the financial side of the business while George served as general manager and developed several prefabricated home designs. The Studio Bungalow was the most famous of these “kit houses.” Patented in the 1930s, it was geared toward lower income families making it possible for the average wage earner to own their own home. A model of the kit was introduced at the 1935 Pan-American Exposition in Balboa Park. After the FHA endorsed the “kit house,” hundreds were sold all over San Diego through 1942. The “Building an Eco Home” series is nine articles that were originally published in The Healthy Independent while we were in the process of building our current home. I have made only minor edits to include links and format for the online publishing. I will be discussing green building and remodeling in more detail in upcoming posts, so if you want to know more about a topic, please make a request.
For those of you who are new to our “eco-home”, let me provide a brief overview of progress to date. Our goal at the start of this project was to for family and friends with physical limitations, and that we could fully pursue our interests in organic gardening, orcharding, heirloom plants and livestock and other outdoor pursuits.
Finding the right property in our budget was a challenge, but we did it. (Read more about that in part 2.)  House placement and access presented some more challenges, but we finally broke ground in October 2004. Just about everything that could happen to slow things down, did, but we are finally nearing completion. Hopefully by the end of May or early June we will be moving into our new home.

His industrious nature led him and his brothers Charles and Albert to form Stickley Brothers & Company in 1883, the same year in which he married Eda Ann Simmons. Within five years, the company was dissolved and Stickley’s ambitions led him to partner with Elgin Simonds, a salesman in the furniture trade, to form the firm of Stickley & Simonds in Binghamton, New York. During the 1890s, Stickley divided his efforts between his new enterprise and, with his brother Leopold, served as a foreman of furniture operations at the Auburn State Prison. In 1898 he orchestrated the removal of his business partner and formed the Gustave* Stickley Company (*he dropped the use of the "e" in 1903).
In the summer of 1900 he worked with Henry Wilkinson and, possibly, LaMont A. Warner (soon his first staff designer) to create his first Arts and Crafts works in an experimental line called the New Furniture. In 1901 he changed the name of his firm to the United Crafts, issued a new catalogue written by Syracuse professor Irene Sargent, and began to offer middle class consumers a host of progressive furniture designs in ammonia-fumed quartersawn white oak, as well as other mostly native woods. In October 1901, Stickley published the first issue of  magazine, an important vehicle for promoting Arts and Crafts philosophy as well as the products of his factory within the context of articles, reviews, and advertisements for a range of products of interest to the homemaker.

Page Plus Plans

Page Plus Plans

Whether you are new to Page Plus or an existing Page Plus customer on a different plan for information on switching plans), you must purchase and load an initial Unlimited Talk n Text PIN onto your account to subscribe to this plan. Once the plan is active, you can replenish it monthly with additional Unlimited Talk n Text PINs, which can be “stacked” in advance if you choose.

Optionally, you may renew your plan with Standard plan PINs, provided you carry a sufficient amount on your plan renewal date to renew your plan. Since Standard PINs have the effect of adding a cash balance to your account when you are on an active monthly plan, you can use your cash balance to automatically renew your monthly plan; as cash for additional charged services such as international calls; or to add a reserve to your account for “overages.” For example, if you run out of data on your plan before your renewal date and want to use more, you can use your cash balance to continue using data at the “overage” rate of the plan.

Alternatively, you can renew your entire plan early by calling Customer Service and requesting an early renewal. Calling Customer Service is the way to do this - simply adding another plan  PIN to your account will not automatically renew your plan early. If Customer Service renews your plan early for you, the entire plan of minutes/messages/data will be reset - nothing will roll over, and your new renewal date will be set for one month out.
